In the beginning of the year 2008, everything seemed normal. All the politicians were gearing up for another presidential election, America’s soldiers were fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, and every one else was going about their own business. The people of Pinedale were simply gearing up for another season of tourism and keeping a wary eye on their cattle and oil fields like they did every single year. But this year was going to be different.

No one knows what happened or who did it, they only know that one fall afternoon they could see an explosion in the south. It looked like a mushroom cloud over Denver. Panic ensued as every one tried to make sure their loved ones were safe. After all, Denver was the only sizable city anywhere nearby, there were more than a few of Pinedale’s families who lost someone in that initial explosion. Then people had to see to the children who had been frightened and the travelers who had just lost their most immediate means of getting home, Denver’s airport. All the while, people wondered if it was an accident or an attack.

They struggled on, waiting for someone to tell them what was going on. After all, all the communications were out thanks to the explosion. The strange thing was that no one came. No one. Little by little they pieced together everyone’s knowledge of what had happened in the outside world, and the result was grim. Apparently more than one city had been hit, but how many was anyone’s guess. The United States had been attacked.

About a week later, the night sky was lit up once again, this time by the United States’ own weapons being sent up in retaliation. For a moment it seemed that the whole world had stopped just to watch those two pinpoints of light fly overhead, then everything went black and every machine in town stopped working. The missiles had caused an electromagnetic pulse and now everything with wires was worthless.

For the first time the gravity of the situation truly hit everyone. The result was not pretty. Desperation caused people to steal from others as food and fuel were in short supply, and those who would defend themselves were soon carrying rifles or shotguns with them wherever they went. The roads were stalked by scavengers and all about Pinedale, the world has become a dangerous place. Still, within the small town there is some sense of order. The mayor clings desperately to hope and makes the town’s citizens do the same.

Struggling to get by in this strange new world has forced people to work together on some level. People are banding together to pull each other through. In the midst of all the tragedy and chaos, it may just be that stronger friendships and closer bonds can be formed. After all, the old world is gone and everyone has a second chance.

The world they once knew has been destroyed and the future is what they make of it. Forces of anarchy and order are at war once again, which side will you join?
